Korea's only IOC-recognized sports-medicine centre; the first in East Asia (re-designated 3×, 2015–2026). Founded as a consortium of Yonsei University, Wonju Severance Christian Hospital and the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, we ground our work in sports medicine and biomechanics — researching athlete injury prevention and musculoskeletal injury prevention and rehabilitation, and connecting precise measurement data to personalized exercise prescription and AI & digital health.

van Mechelen and Finch together form the foundation of our research. van Mechelen tells us why prevention matters and gives the sequence to follow; Finch reminds us that evidence only prevents injuries when it is actually adopted in the field. YISSEM works across that full sequence — establishing the problem, uncovering the mechanisms, and carrying prevention to where athletes train and compete. To translate this research model into practice and solve real-world problems, we pursue research spanning injury epidemiology, biomechanics, exercise physiology, sport psychology, artificial intelligence (AI), and data science. In particular, we actively conduct interdisciplinary and convergent research with orthopedic surgery, rehabilitation medicine, and many other clinical and basic-science fields.

Grounded in sports medicine and biomechanics, we prevent and rehabilitate musculoskeletal injuries and connect precise measurement data to personalized exercise prescription and AI & digital health.

These directions are led by three labs, each with its own area of expertise:

We precisely classify musculoskeletal injuries such as chronic ankle instability (CAI) into subtypes and develop an ankle-focused digital rehabilitation system linking staged, tailored rehabilitation with home-rehab tracking.

Biomechanics-Based Functional Assessment

Using motion capture (Vicon), plantar pressure, and IMU sensors, we precisely measure lower-limb alignment, muscle function, and movement quality to quantify injury risk and loading/movement strategies.

Data-Driven Personalized Exercise Prescription

We research prescription models that combine passport-style self-records with periodic functional and fitness assessments to generate personalized exercise—automatically or semi-automatically—reflecting each individual's changing status.

We integrate and interpret heterogeneous measurement data through an ontology-based AI twin, developing exercise-recommendation and risk-monitoring AI that pre-screens injury and overtraining risk (including military fitness-training applications).

Using non-invasive rapid doping-test technology and a machine-learning Doping Passport platform, we build a prevention-focused system that predicts and manages individual doping risk in advance.

Building on our IOC-recognized centre (YISSEM), we use large-scale data—including 2,663 taekwondo athletes worldwide—to identify injury mechanisms and risk factors.

              Rapid screening 6-domain Passport ML · DRS Prevention + athlete care

              Combines non-invasive rapid doping screening (mask-type exhaled-breath MOF sensor) with a machine-learning multi-domain (6-domain) Doping Passport, validated in a 1,000-person Sports Clean Living Lab, to predict and manage individual doping risk in advance — shifting anti-doping from post-hoc detection to prevention. Beyond the cost, time and field-access limits of WADA lab-based testing, it aims at large-scale field testing and management spanning elite athletes, PE applicants and public-sector candidates. Crucially, continuously monitoring the six passports means the platform does not stop at doping prevention and testing — it simultaneously supports athlete management in each domain (injury prevention, conditioning and health).

              AI-Based Cadet Physical-Training Performance Management & Injury Prediction

              An ontology-based ‘Physical Readiness Twin’ integrates monthly unmanned fitness-station measures and continuous wearable biosignals to deliver personalized exercise/recovery recommendations and predict injury & overtraining risk (acute/chronic anomaly detection) — validated with ~300 cadets at the Korea Naval Academy. Instructors review each cadet's status and act on it, with optional re-measurement for follow-up; the consortium pairs top-tier Vision-AI 3D motion analysis with clinical safety review. Tracking cadets' fitness, function, exercise volume and workout logs guides training-load decisions, prevents injuries and keeps cadets in optimal condition; extended to the general public, it helps build a Patient Medical Record (PMR) and PSR that support the health of both cadets and the wider population.

              WOW × Physio Joint-Venture Exercise-Therapy Centre (YISSEM-based)

              A WOW × Physio joint venture (JV) delivering YISSEM-based ‘measure → assess → personalized exercise therapy → re-assess’ care in offline centres. WOW brings capital, brand, space and network; Physio brings exercise-therapy IP, assessment protocols, the app, licensed professionals and the YISSEM linkage (equity WOW 51 : Physio 49). The app matches each assessment to a function-improving protocol in an assess → prescribe → re-assess cycle, built on a shared 3-track standard exercise protocol across body regions. Crucially, the centre builds and field-deploys a PSR platform to manage the health of the general public and older adults, and acts as a real-world site to validate the technologies and platforms developed above — advancing an AI comprehensive health-management and personalized-exercise service platform.

              Future Sarcopenia Prediction from AI-Derived Powerpenia Phenotypes — A Prospective Study Using Head Motion During Indoor Cycling

              This project establishes the first AI-derived definition of Powerpenia using smartphone-based head-motion analysis during indoor cycling. Instead of predefined cut-offs, unsupervised machine learning identifies clinically meaningful power phenotypes, prospectively validated to predict sarcopenia over one and three years, and develops an AI-guided cycling intervention to improve muscle power and functional ageing.

              • Muscle power is a stronger functional biomarker of healthy ageing than mass or strength
              • No objective, data-driven diagnostic standard yet exists for Powerpenia

              An integrated injury surveillance system for four designated middle and high school basketball teams in Seoul. Professional athletic trainers (ATs) are dispatched to national tournaments for immediate on-site conditioning and care, while a daily injury database systematically tracks epidemiological data. Continuous tracking of injury mechanisms, treatments and player status enables evidence-based analysis of injury characteristics and risk factors — preventing injuries, optimizing readiness, and building a foundational framework for student-athlete health management.

              UX-Centered Sports Digital Healthcare Design

              This course focuses on the design of sports and digital healthcare services from a user experience (UX)-centered perspective, with an emphasis on bridging research insights, design decisions, and real-world application. In the era of AI-assisted app and service development, the critical skill is no longer how to build something, but what should be built and why. The course aims to cultivate students’ ability to identify unmet health-related needs in real-life contexts and to understand users’ physical, psychological, and social experiences. Rather than developing new technologies, students design digital healthcare solutions using existing tools such as smartphones and digital platforms that people can realistically adopt and sustain. Particular emphasis is placed on human-centered thinking—the ability to understand individual and societal needs, emotions, and contexts—an area where human insight remains essential and cannot be fully replaced by artificial intelligence. Research and AI tools are used to inform design decisions and explore real-world effectiveness, rather than serving as primary research methods.               Professor Song is a researcher in sports medicine and athletic training, dedicated to understanding and preventing chronic ankle instability (CAI) after ankle sprains. His work investigates how sensorimotor dysfunction and biomechanical changes affect lower-extremity cartilage health, aiming to prevent post-traumatic osteoarthritis. His research has recently expanded into visuomotor control and sensory reweighting to develop evidence-based, neurocognitive rehabilitation strategies that restore movement and joint function.

              Inje Lee and Sae Yong Lee were named 2nd runner-up in the Best Systematic Review category at the Journal of Sport Rehabilitation’s 1st Annual Excellence Awards Showcase (2025). Paper: “How Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome Is Affected by Alignment, Range of Motion, Strength, and Gait Biomechanics: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.”
